Eh… it was a pretty unenjoyable episode. Kinda… miserable.
The message they were going for was portrayed incredibly poorly. Mr. Hankey was supposed to be the likable asshole in this regard, the poo we all know and love who’s kind of a piece of shit but means well.
All he did was say some rude things on twitter. That shouldn’t make him that unlikable, it’s just words, and PC babies are bound to overreact to words. That’s the message that they were trying to convey. But the fact that he just would not take responsibilities for his actions made it impossible to defend him. His own defense was so weak.
Instead of doubling down and defending the type of person he was, and that it wasn’t a big deal, he constantly apologized and backpedaled, and on top of that, used the same excuse over and over again.
Whether or not this was meant to be a parody of a particular person is irrelevant. As a standalone, this episode’s pacing and portrayal of its message is shit. Mr. Hankey is not likable, and the scene where he leaves implies that we’re supposed to care. As if he hasn’t been anything but annoying all damn episode.
Overall I appreciate the whole “being too PC leaves everyone miserable” statement it made through both the A and B plots. And it’s kind of a meta-narrative I guess since the episode itself is so god damn miserable. But it just wasn’t that hard hitting because Mr. Hankey was such a damn flake.
If Mr. Hankey was likable, if he had some kind of arc throughout the episode instead of constantly dodging responsibility till the end, then the episode’s message would’ve been better received, and there would be a much more clear conversation to be sparked because of it.
