i think it’s also a part of a broader problem w a lot of artists either deliberately not wanting to or not wanting to learn how to give ethnic characters ethnic features – you see it a lot w token too; i can only picture a handful of art i’ve seen of token where he actually has textured hair or even dark skin for that matter. kyle, for whatever goddamn reason, is by and large the main target of the yaoi treatment so i think a lot of that ties into how he’s been drawn – really soft and small, straight or only slightly wavy hair, your typical ~sexy femmeboi uwu~ stuff, and i know there are lots of people who are adamant about kyle not having an aquiline nose out of the belief that it makes him less attractive
there’s been some arguments in the past mainly surrounding the line in “the list” where gerald remarks that kyle has sheila’s nose being played only as a joke and not being taken as canon, but i think it misses the entire point of that conversation in that gerald and sheila weren’t trying to further kyle’s insecurity about how he looks; they were trying to comfort him. what reason would his parents have to 1.) lie about his appearance to him or 2.) mean that kyle takes after his mother in that regard as a means to be malicious
i wouldn’t say the -only- artists who draw kyle like that are ky//man shippers though. it’s how i always draw him (or, unless this is also veiled criticism towards me as – how i try to draw him) and i’ve seen the tide shifting away from tiny little button-nose kyle recently, but i both agree and really hate that this is a trend i’ve seen in a lot ky//man art – there is very, very often some kind of visible highlight of the fact that kyle is jewish whether it be in kyle having a more prominent nose (that is also sometimes grossly exaggerated in a racist caricature for this exact purpose) or by him wearing a pendant of the star of david/having the star of david on his clothing in some manner (which in this context is. yikes) or by, even more brazenly, having cartman dressed in full-out nazi regalila. it’s obviously to play into the whole forbidden romance angle in the most depraved way possible and the inherent wrongness in a relationship between the two of them and it really is tone-deaf and disgusting. lmao

I’m not an artist so I don’t know the process but in the fandom I do see that he is often whitewashed— in other words he is drawn with lighter skin and he doesn’t have the proper hair texture.
I understand not many artist aren’t experienced with drawing different ethnicities because from what I heard artist commonly draw characters which resemble them or the features they’re used to. As someone who’s black it sucks seeing Token drawn with straight hair which would never be the case unless he got a relaxer (perm) or wayyy lighter skin. The same goes for Nichole.
I mean you can give him a simple eraser top which is again a popular style among black boys/ guys or just a simple shaved shadow look idk.
Colorism is already a huge issue in the black community so favoring to lighten his complexion is a tad problematic.
